Hard Work Pays Off

Our annual Catch a Rising Star conference is coming up next weekend. This event hosts all of our top location managers across the country to come together in Las Vegas! Who doesn’t want a trip to Vegas right? Well, all of their hard work and determination is finally paying off. Their dedication and career mindset to the success of the business has brought attention to top executives as they are chosen to go. The event includes dinners out, shows on the strip, and sightseeing as well as lots of one on one time and networking opportunities to maximize capabilities as location managers.

The Self-Aware Leader

Everyone loves a good book recommendation right? Well I know we do here at Accent Group. My current assigned textbook in Team Leadership at Oakland University is The Self-Aware Leader: A Proven Model for Reinventing Yourself  by Daniel Gallagher. After reading just one chapter in the book I knew it was just something I had to share. Gallagher is a Fortune 100 Executive and he shares his distinctive approach on how to become the best leader one can be by increasing self-awareness from a business aspect. He offers a modern outlook on how management is always quickly changing. Two key points of the book is a new psychological structure on leadership that’s applicable to today’s business and concrete strategy to apply the new concepts and ideas into action.

Our Puerto Rico Trip!!

Puerto Rico was such a great time!! To start off, Congratulations to our manager Lindsay for being promoted to Regional Consulting Manager!! With her promotion, she received a beautiful brand new Cartier Watch. Lindsay started four and  half years ago into an entry level position with our management development program in San Diego, CA . She now manages fourteen different offices throughout the country as well as four campaigns from coast to coast. The promotion is to recognize that she has helped our portfolio of clients to expand into new markets as well as others grow into a managerial role.  Her goals are to continue to help others grow into new markets and continue to be a great example for others. This promotion was special enough, though Lindsay was also awarded one of six other awards during the R&R conference. She was recognized with the Consistency Award for having a very consistent year against all other markets.

The question now is – what is next for Accent Group and Location Manager?!?

We know Accent Group will have another phenomenal year in terms of growth, acquiring new clients as well as other opportunities to enjoy a lil fun in the sun from time to time!

6 Vital Decisions You Must Make to Succeed!

We here at Accent Group are filling Entry Level Event Representative Positions with the possibility for Management Positions for the right candidates. We feel that these 6 vital points will help individuals succeed on a business, as well as personal level. If you want to beat the odds and win in the start-up game, please review these 6 vital steps.

1. Set goals- When you start your venture, you most likely have nothing to offer the people who you will try to recruit.

Set three kinds of goals: For recruiting others, create a mission that give the new venture so much meaning to those recruits that they could not resist.

The mission will only get you so far though–you also need a long-term goal for investors–something like going public in five years or finding a corporate acquirer. And you will also need to set short-term goals that help you learn what you need to do to grow without burning through your resources.

2. Pick markets- If you can set goals, you’re far from out of the woods. After all, you need to figure out who will use or buy your product. And to do that, you will need to pick the markets that you’re going to target.

Two hints for picking the right market–you have to have a personal passion for solving that market’s problem and the customers in that market must see your product as a compelling answer to a problem that none of your competitors are solving.

3. Raise capital- It goes without saying that everyone has bills to pay. So if you are going to hire people or buy supplies, you will need money. But where can you get it?

The best place to look initially is probably your customers. If you can get them to pay you more for the product than it costs you to build it–and cover your fixed costs–you are going to be in a good position. You might also try to get your suppliers to extend you favorable payment terms. If neither of those suffices, you can try tapping your own bank account or your credit cards.

And I’ve found that you may want to match your efforts to raise money from other people (friends and family, angel investors, venture capitalists) to the stage of your start-up’s development, moving up that ladder as you ramp your sales.

4. Build the team- You can’t do it all yourself, but resist the urge to hire friends unless those friends have skills in areas critical to your venture’s success that complement your own. I found that the most successful ventures do a great job of dividing up the work that must be done among the most talented people. And they create a culture that binds them all together to focus on shared goals.

Jones Collaborates, To grow, you must get customers to use your product and eventually pay. But I found that many customers are afraid to get too dependent on a start-up that could go out of business and leave them in the lurch.

To overcome that, you have to offer the customer what I called a quantum value leap (QVL), a product that solves a problem that customers care about better than the competition, and to give that solution away. If that QVL actually delivers those early customers will tell all their friends. And you can eventually upgrade the product and start charging customers to use it.

6. Adapt to change- You might think getting those five decisions right would be enough, but you would be wrong. That’s because customer needs, technology, and competitors all evolve and the very success you achieve by making those first five decisions well could doom your venture to destruction.

Unless you can adapt to those changes- seizing new opportunities and guarding against evolving threats- your customers will flee and your venture will be decline. I found that winning ventures follow three approaches to keep this from happening- one of these is to craft a vision of the skills at which the start-up must excel and to make acquisitions and strategic hires to close the capability gap.

Easy Ways To Completely Blow Your Job Interview

When you go on a job interview, failing to impress the hiring manager with your eloquence may be the least of your worries. There are some things you might do that go way beyond flubbing a tough question.

We asked nine recruiters and job search experts to share interview horror stories — the biggest blunders, faux pas, and missteps they’ve seen — to bring you a compilation of things to avoid in an interview if you want to be called back for a second round.

1. Run late. Even better, run late, and don’t call.

Everyone is human — we get flat tires, flights get canceled — and interviewers understand that. So while your best bet is to be on time, if you make every effort to contact the interviewer as soon as you know you’ll be late, you may still have a fighting chance at the job.

A good rule of thumb is to arrive 10 to 15 minutes in advance.

“There is such a thing as being too early,” says David Lewis, president of Conn.-based HR consultant OperationsInc. “That’s what Starbucks is for.”

You might assume that there is an application to fill out when you arrive — but you should also assume that your interviewer accounted for that when they scheduled you.

And if you really don’t want the job:

“A candidate completed an amazing phone interview, and we were really looking forward to meeting them, but they never showed up. The candidate evidently had a flat tire, but didn’t think to call us until well over 24 hours later.”

2. Overschedule yourself.

Whether you’re unemployed or a passive job-seeker, it’s important to remember that looking for a job is a full-time job. You’ll need to meticulously manage your time — so if you need to schedule an interview for your lunch break, eat a big breakfast; don’t go into the interview with your stomach growling, says Lewis but don’t bring your lunch with you, or come between your workout and your shower, either.

And if you really don’t want the job:

“A candidate sent me an e-mail saying he didn’t answer when I called because he had another interview today and he needed to ‘take a break from that process.'”

3. Act like you’re going out to a bar.

Between too-tight clothes, flirtatious mannerisms, and exposed chest hair, anything that you’d do or wear in a bar setting is bad for an interview.

“An interview is not an opportunity to improve your social life,” says Lewis.

“A couple of years ago I had a candidate try to work the angle of being overly friendly with everyone in the interview room,” says Callan. “It got to the point where we couldn’t end the interview quickly enough.”

And if you really don’t want the job:

“A young woman dressed extremely inappropriately, forgetting to wear undergarments. In spite of what she may have thought, it was a sure-fire way not to get asked back for a second interview!”

4. Wait a week to send a thank you note. Or don’t send one at all.

Sending a post-interview thank you note should be as instinctive as brushing your teeth twice a day. While the debate ensues over e-mailed versus handwritten notes, many experts suggest that e-mailed notes are just as effective.

“Handwritten notes are more thoughtful,” says Vicki Salemi, an accounting recruiter who has worked in HR at KPMG and Deloitte, and author of Big Career in the Big City, “but they put you at a disadvantage over someone who instantaneously e-mails one the same day.”

If you do choose to e-mail, keep it simple: “Send me a simple note — not a Bible. Nothing I need to scroll down through,” says Lewis.

And if you really don’t want the job:

“Send a single thank you e-mail cc’ing everyone with whom you had an interview that week – [even if they are all] at different companies.”

5. Use your cell phone in the meeting.

“Cell phones don’t belong in an interview,” says Salemi, unless you’re using it before you arrive to let them know your car broke down and you’re running late. “Once you make contact, it should be off and out of sight.”

For many, this may seem like common sense, but Salemi says she’s seen it all. Busy job-seekers lining up interviews may be nervous to miss another recruiter’s call, but the interview will end quickly if you take one during the meeting.

“One candidate gave me the ‘talk to the hand’ motion,” says Salemi. “It should be you and the interviewer. That’s it.”

And if you really don’t want the job:

“Take a call during the interview from a girl you just started dating and sweet-talk her.”

6. Give support staff an attitude.

“Don’t underestimate the importance of the person receiving you in an office,” says Lewis. What he or she says to her superiors before and after the interview often carries a tremendous amount of influence. “Chances are, they’re going to call or instant-message the person you’re interviewing with,” says Lewis, and you don’t want them to say “good luck with this one.”

And if you really don’t want the job:

“When asked by security to show her ID and sign in, [a candidate] yelled at the security guard and moved briskly to the elevator. After, security called the company informing them of what had occurred, and she was not asked back for the next round.”

7. Stalk the company’s employees.

It’s one thing to research the company and those you’re meeting with before heading in for an interview, but you’re crossing a line if you follow up too much, too often. Try to limit communication to only what is necessary by job-seeking standards — the thank you note, follow-up call to reiterate your interest, and the “I’ve found another position” letter, if that time comes.

And if you really don’t want the job:

“A job-seeker waited by the CEO’s car, and when the CEO got in the car, [the candidate] started knocking on the window.”
